Bamboo resource is very rich in China,but the utilization ratio of bamboo material is not high.The application of bamboo/steel composite has a great significance as an engineering structural material used in the building construction.On the basis of existing steel/bamboo composite structures,this paper designs two types of new steel / bamboo composite specimens,namely thin-walled steel / bamboo plywood hollow short column(SBCC)with binding bars and without binding bars.The axial compression behavior of SBCCs is studied.Firstly,this paper introduces the mechanical properties of materials,and produces the specimens for shear-resistance and tensile-resistance between steel and bamboo,or bamboo and bamboo.5 specimens of each group are test for the bond strength.Secondly,10 SBCCs are divided into two groups to perform the axial compression tests,one group with binding bars and other group without binding bars.The failure modes of SBCC loaded are investigated and the influence of the binding bars on the characteristics load of SBCC are mainly analyzed.The results indicate that the compressive damages of SBCCs without binding bars are primarily the glue failure between the matrix interfaces,and the compressive damage of SBCCs with binding bars are primarily the broken damage of plywood material at the end of the column.Compared with the specimens without binding bars,the crack load of the specimens with binding bars is averagely increased by 19.4%,and the ultimate bearing capacity(ultimate compressive stress)is averagely increased by 17.2%.Moreover,axial compression deformation and compressive strain are definitely increased.The binding bars can effectively suppress the glue failure,change the ultimate failure mode and significantly improve the ultimate compression resistant of SBCC.Finally,the numerical simulation analysis are carried out to the two groups of SBCCs,and the numerical results generally conform to test results.
