Throughout the history of C hinese and western garden architecture, C hinese classical gardens as the optimum representative of the east garden system, from its start in Shang Dynasty to its development in the pre-Qin period and its flourishing time in the Sui and Tang dynasties until its prime period in the late Q ing dynasty, can be viewed as establishing magnificent success and exclusive dignity. Accumulating thousands of years of history, Chinese classical garden has formed its unique garden design ideology, profound landscape gardening theories and impeccable garden- making techniques. Classical garden includes the hall, room, building, pavilion, booth, platform, corridor, shed and other elements of garden architecture. Among them, the corridor does not seem prominent in its volume, construction technology and other aspects, which pertain to the minor role and mostly functions as the complement in the garden. However, the corridor, since its emergence, always plays an indispensable part in the gardening planning, presenting the penetration of ancient and modern eras. It can be concluded to three reasons: firstly, with its distinctive flexibility, the corridor may lead up to the mountains and down to the water, pass freely in round and rectangular and fully integrate with garden landscape buildings to constitute flexible layouts that best accord with Chinese landscape concept of “harmony unity of man and universe”. Secondly, the corridor is open and pass-through in its spatial structures. It has functions of shelter and landscape viewing and provides the space to have fun or linger for the guests. Its feature of “gray space” makes it a good medium for internal and external communication. Thirdly, the corridor that trajects in the gardens to bridge many attractions and realize space partitions, creating unique and rich variations in C hinese classical garden space and greatly adding to the touring enjoyment and artistic perceptions. At present, the corridor, because of its unique flexibility, interactivity, emotional identity and other advantages in its distinctive space, is still a regular element to be found in the modern landscapes and buildings. But modern life demands for environment and building functions and forms have undergone a huge change; Combined with the strong influence of the western landscape, building system and culture, the corridor designs in Chinese classical garden show a sharp gap from the modern peop le's demands for their living environment, This paper plans to study and sums up the innovative corridor design methods to reinforce the tradition inheriting, providing reference for the industry in the current corridor designs of gardens and buildings. This paper leverages the comparison of figure- ground relationship to focus on the corridor design of Chinese classical garden, introduces modern ecological theory into the study of the traditional corridor, and strives to make comprehensive analysis of the corridor with the most intuitive graphical method from the perspective of methodology. It sums up the volumes, forms, organization manners, spatial features, layout tempo and other design features of the corridor in Chinese classical garden and deeply probes into the essence of the corridor in C hinese classical garden. Based upon the current reality, the study analyzed and described all varieties of expressions in the corridor, such as hidden linear space, variation of shape interface and versatile functions etc., as well as the existing problems. The author proposed that the innovative designs of the corridor need to follow the basic principles of humanity and integrity, and break up the space constraints, innovate interface forms, innovate processing materials and integrate with the characteristics of the new times, spirits and other new approaches to realize the innovation of the current corridor designs.
