With the development of space technology,spacecraft requires that electrical power subsystem supplies more and more power,which causes universal apply of high-voltage solar array.The space environment is complex,there is much plasma in GEO.The elevation of work voltage increase the opporunity of the solar array and space environment to take interaction,then electrostatic discharges(ESD)emerge,which will lead to power loss or invalidation of the solar array,so the new failure mode due to ESD causes more and more attention.Firstly the state of art for spacecraft advanced solar cell technology is introduced,the current status and the future roadmap of solar array are analyzed.The failure induced by solar array is introduced and necessity of defending ESD technology is discoursed on.Then the space environment of GEO is introduced,and charging/discharging effects of spacecraft and solar array is analyzed.The analysis of the solar array secondary discharge phenomena,the principle is as follows.The interaction of space plasma and the solar array leads that the solar array surface is charged.Since the state of charging is different,when the disparity reaches the threshold value,ESD will occur.If the voltage of adjacent solar series reaches the threshold value,the secondary discharge will occur,which will release plentiful energy.Enough energy will cause the pyrogenation of the baseplate,and a low impedance access appears,then solar array may occur short circuit.Facing the complex space environment,the temperature and radiation adaptability and surface charging for solar array is analyzed.According to the research about secondary discharging of the high voltage solar array,we confirm the incentives of electrostatic discharging in solar array,including: 1)the charging potential difference on the surface of solar array;2)the potential difference between adjacent cells of the solar array;3)the electric current of solar array cells.Aiming at these three factors,we carry out some research and confirm four primary measures about electrostatic discharging protection:1)ITO film plating on surface of solar cell coverglass2)Voltage reduction between adjacent solar series3)Current reduction of each solar series4)RTV glue filling between solar cellsFinally,a newly power budget method for solar array output power is provide.The method is verified by applied the in-orbit data.The method is applicable for satellite solar array output power calculation.
