With strong drought resistance, resistance to trampling and disease-resistant ability, Buchloe dactyloides is the ideal water-saving low maintenance lawn grass, which has fine texture. But shortcomings also exist in the process of application, such as the green period is short, landscape configuration is not reasonable and so on. The aim is to carry on the reasonable landscape configuration, improve the effect of ornamental in application of the garden, and provide experimental basis and germplasm materials for Buchloe dactyloides better applied to the botanical garden green space.According to previous study results of chromosome ploidy, this study selected nine Buchloe dactyloides of different geographical provenance from more than 600 germplasm resources which were collected by the team from different ecological regions as experiment materials, and compared with known diploid commercial varieties‘cowboy',to study its biological characteristics, including morphology and growth characteristics, phenological period, and photosynthetic characteristics. The main conclusions are as follows:(1)The morphology and growth characteristics: With the highest height of 19.1 cm, ‘density'is tall and upright, whose biomass is big and is the cluster type. With the shortest height of 6.2 cm and the slowest growth speed, 3-22 A is dwarfing and has poor creeping. 15-4A with shortest leaf of 9.9 cm, minimum stolons diameter of 0.69 mm, minimum stolon length of 31.9 cm, is fine grass, which has a good appreciation. 60-2 with leaf width up to 2.19 mm, stolon length of 53.8 cm, diameter up to 1.09 mm, and the fastest growth of 1.03 cm/d, is the guerrilla type, whose biomass is big and has strong creeping.(2)The phenological period: 3-22 A turned green for the earliest on April 12, 63-6A turned into yellow for the latest on October 30, ‘density'and 58-3A has the longestgreen period up to 197 d.(3)The photosynthetic characteristics:With the maximum light saturation point of 1750.236?mol·m-2·s-1, and maximum light quantum efficiency of 0.105?mol·m-2·s-1, 70-3A is a type of light, which can make use of the strong light. With minimum light saturation point of 550.407?mol·m-2·s-1 and average daily photosynthetic rate of 10.31?mol·m-2·s-1,69-6A has poor photosynthetic capacity.3-22 A has maximum light compensation point of 104.936?mol·m-2·s-1, which is 1.1 times higher than ‘cowboy', and thus leading to poor ability of using weak light. With minimum light compensation point of 17.048?mol·m-2·s-1,which is 65.4% lower than ‘cowboy',58-3A can make good use of weak light. With the maximum daily photosynthetic rate of 22.506?mol·m-2·s-1,15-4A has high optical activity and strong photosynthetic ability.(4)‘density' with tall height and long green stage, can be used as a delight in the grass and slope greening, and widely cultivated in north China.15-4A with short blade and stolons, strong photosynthetic ability and slow growth speed, which require less ma intenance and management, can be configured on the highway, as extensive lawn cultiv ation. 58-3A with long green period and strong ability of using weak light can be used in the environment where the light is a little weaker.3-22 A with low height, small leaf and slow growth need less maintenance management, which is suitable for extensive la wn cultivation. 60-2 with wide blade, thick stolons and high spread, whose biomass is bi g,and has strong coverage ability,is available to construct lawn rapidly and achieve goo d ornamental effect very soon.To sum up,in combination with the biological characteristics of different clones of Buchloe dactyloides, reasonable landscape configuration can improve the effect of ornamental in application of the garden, and provides experimental basis and germplasm materials for Buchloe dactyloides better applied to the botanical garden green space.
