Zenia insignis Chun. is the rare specie of southern China. It is tree species under state protection(category ii). In order to discover the genetic variation characters accurately, the tree height, diameter and volume of five sites were analyzed, and selected excellent provenance and family. The major research results were as follows.1. There was different difference in the growth traits among provenances at different sites. The tree height traits had significant difference among provenances at Hekou, Fogang and Dongmen, but there was no significant difference at Yingzhou and Jiulianshan. The Diameter at breast height(DBH) growth has no significant difference among provenances at Jiulianshan and Fogang, but there was significant difference at Hekou, Yingzhou and Dongmen. The volume had significant difference among provenances at Hekou, Fogang and Jiulianshan. there was no significant difference at Yingzhou and Dongmen.Preliminary selected 5 excellent provenances, Debao, Malipo, Napo, Pingxiang, Pingguo, were selected according to volume.2. The correlation between growth characteristics and geographic and climatic factor were different in all the sites. There was no significant correlation between the growth traits and the geographical factors at Hekou and Yingzhou. The tree height showed significant negative correlation with latitude at Dongmen. The DBH and volume showed significant negative correlation with latitude at Jiulianshan. The DBH and volume showed significant positive correlation with longitude, and the DBH showed significant negative correlation with altitude, and the volume showed significant negative correlation with altitude at Fogang. Only a little of the growth traits of different provenances had significant or extremely significant correlation with climate factors of the seed collecting zone. The tree height showed significant positive correlation with annual average sunshine hours. The DBH at Jiulianshan test points and the DBH and volume at Fogang showed significant positive correlation with annual average temperature3. The provenances of Hekou, Yingzhou and Jiulianshan were clustered according to three growth traits of Zenia insignis Chun.. The composition of the provenances was different at different sites.4. There was different difference in the growth traits among families at different sites. There was a significant difference in DBH, but no significant difference in height and volume among families at Hekou. The three traits among families reached the extremely significant difference at Dongmen, and no significant difference at Jiulian. There was significant difference in height, but no significant difference in DBH and volume among families at Fogang. The traits among families had no significant difference at Yingzhou. Take volume as selecting superior families standard. Choosed 12 excellent families preliminary, including Pingguo28, Debao21, Guilin18, Pingguo30, Yangshan5, Debao10, Debao11, Debao24, Guilin1, Pingguo16, Pingxiang6, lingchuan19.
