Wax apple(Syzygium samarangense Merr. Et Perry.) is an important tropical fruit tree with high economic value. It can flower several times in one year and can produce off-season fruits. The key technology of the off-season fruit production is the control of vegetative growth. Shading, drought stress, water logging are used to control vegetative growth. Winter chilling is also effective on growth control. In the present study, a widely cultivated ‘Heizhenzhu' wax apple trees were selected and were shaded to investigate the effect of shading on carbohydrate. Relative carbohydrate content in the flowering trees and nonflowering trees after re-exposed to light were compared. The results were as follows:1 Shading treatment 30 d decreased the contents of total sugar, reducing sugar, fructose, sucrose, glucose, and starch in leaves of wax-apple. Those in different branches showed similar trends.2 Shaded trees were sprayed with 200 times 48% chlorpyrifos to induce flowering after re-exposed to sunlight. The results showed that trees treated in summer did not flower, while those in autumn could flower. Relative carbohydrate content comparison between the flowering trees and nonflowering trees indicated that the content increased after exposed to sunlight. However, that in the flowering trees is higher than nonflowering trees.3 Relative conductivity, malondialdehyde content(MDA) of leaves increased after low temperature, drought stress, and waterlogging treatments. Low temperature treatment increased relative water content, while drought stress and waterlogging decreased relative water content. Low temperature, drought stress, and waterlogging treatments increased the contents of soluble protein, reducing glutathione(GSH), and ascorbic acid(As A), as well as the activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD) and ascorbic acid peroxidase(APX).
