The field experiment was conducted to study the effects of different rate of seeds on the quality of rice seedling, growth period, tillering ability and yield of Zhongzao39, Zhuliangyou819 and Hyou518. The results from this study are useful to improve the popularization and application for rice machine planting technology. The main results are as follows:1. The viability of rice seedling, width of stem, total root number, white root number, the ratio of white root number to total root number and biomass of aboveground parts were decreased with the rate of seeds increased. The seedling height and seedling leaf ages were not pronounced. The biomass of aboveground parts was significantly correlated with the seedling height, seedling leaf ages and total root number(P<0.01). The correlation coefficients were 0.63,0.63 and 0.54 respectively.2. The effect of different rate of seeds on the growth period of Zhuliangyou819 and Hyou518 were not significant. Improving seeding rate caused the Zhongzao39 in Heshan and Xiangyin reached green period, tiller stage, panicle initiation, heading and maturing stages late.3. The vacancy plant rate and tillering rate of Zhongzao39, Zhuliangyou819 and Hyou518 decreased and the basic seedlings and maximum tillers increased with the seeding rate increased.4. The total grain number, grain number and seed setting rate of Zhongzao39, Zhuliangyou819 and Hyou518 decreased with the seeding rate increased. But the panicles and grain weight were not pronounced. The altering trends about yield of various varieties in different test sites were different. The coefficient of variation of the yield of Zhongzao39, Zhuliangyou819 and Hyou518 was 7.64%,6.44% and 4.20% respectively.
