Because of the containerized seedling can improve the survival rate of afforestation and conservation, it has been attracting more and more attention in the process of ecological reforestation. Containerized breeding system has got a great development in Shanxi. It is basically mixed the original soil and peat used in the substrate of nursery, and the formula seems casual, which can directly impact on the quality of the seedlings. In order to find the suitable substrate formula for containerized seedling of main coniferous tree species in Shanxi, and in accordance with the principles for selecting substrate, we chose organic base material straw and bark powder as substitutes for peat, because they are common in this area, and with low price and suitable physical and chemical properties, and for inorganic substrate, vermiculite and perlite were chosen. It is formed a composite substrate with appropriate organic and inorganic substrate. The composite substrate of peat:vermiculite (2:1) was used as control, which has been recognized by the international community. We arranged 8 categories with a total of 38 treatments:a combination of two factors and a combination of three factors. Six coniferous tree species (Pinus bungeana, Pinus tabulaeformis, Pinus armndii, Pinus sylvestris, etc.) were selected and the comparative experiments of containerized seedling were carried out in the provincial nursery. It has taken the direst way to plant containerized seedlings and 38 substrate formula were arranged for each species. Through a comprehensive analysis of the root system and the height of seedlings and the physical and chemical properties of the composite substrate, it was indicated that the straw composite substrate had appropriate density and with advantage of permeability and water retention, in addition, the straw composite substrate showed a good performance of pH value, EC value, TDS value, organic matter content and nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content. The results proved that the straw is an important organic material to replace the peat in this area, and the application prospects of the straw are very bright. In addition, through the study of the ecological habits of different tree species, suitable substrate formula were found as a significant guidance in practical production.
