The massive by-product hydrochloric acid of producing organic chloride is difficult to be treated. To solve this problem,a novel process of producing choline chloride was proposed,i.e.2-ethylene chlorohydrin was produced with ethylene glycol and hydrochloric acid, which was used to produce choline chloride with aqueous tri-methylamine.To produce 2-ehthylene chlorohydrin in continuous reactive distillation way,the components' physical properties of the reaction system was researched and the concentration of by-product hydrochloric acid was determined as 28.42% according to the azeotropic composition of 2-ethylene chlorohydrin and water under atmospheric pressure, the feasibility of the process was verified with continuous lab scale experiments. The diversity of the products was considered for adaption to the market,i.e.separating high purity 2-ethylene chlorohydrin from its azeotrope with water with heterogeneous azeotropic distillation, the conceptual design of the process was accomplished with Aspen Plus and the optimal azeotropic agent,i.e.methylbenzene was chosen, the process was optimized with objective function as the total annual cost, and continuous lab scale experiments was done based on the simulation and the results show that the purity of product is not less than 99% and the recovery ratio is 93.5%,which is coincided with simulation. To produce choline chloride with 2-ehtylene chloride and aqueous tri-methylamine via autocatalytic reaction, the experiments were carried, and the results show that choline chloride aqueous with mass concentration 35% can be obtained with the reaction at 50? for 4-5 hours, and the conditions for decoloration and concentration of the product were researched too.At last the process flowsheet of producing choline chloride with hydrochloric acid was determined according to the mentioned experiments and simulation results.
