ObjectiveTo compare the blood serum levels of thyroid hormones between breast cancer patients and the healthy controls, and further to explore the association between the blood serum levels of thyroid hormones and the expressions of ER, PR, HER2 and Ki67 in breast cancer patients. Furthermore, we suspected the relationship between breast cancer and thyroid function, which may be the foundation that the the blood serum levels of thyroid hormones might predict the development of breast cancer and appraise the treatment effectiveness for breast cancer patients.Methods24 patients with breast cancer were enrolled continuously as objects in this research, and their venous blood were collected to assay serum thyroid series within least one week before surgeries. Meanwhile, a total of 28 control subjects were included. Between the two groups, the ages and the menopausal status were at equilibrium. We compared the blood serum levels of thyroid hormones between the two groups. We tested the expressions of ER, PR, HER2 and Ki67 in breast cancer patients by immunohistochemical methods, and explore the association between them and the blood serum levels of thyroid hormones in breast cancer patients and the expressions of ER, PR, HER2 and Ki67.ResultWe compared the mean age and the menopausal status between the two groups, there were no statistically significant differences. Compared with the control group, the Serum levels of FT4 and T4 in breast patients were obviously lower(p=0.000,p=0.015), while the serum levels of TSH were significantly higher(p=0.030).there was no statisticallysignificant difference of serum FT4, T4, TSH between the two groups(P <0.05).We found there is a positive correlation relationship between expression status of ER,PR,Ki67 and serum FT4 in breast cancer group(p=0.027,p=0.019,p=0.022).But there was no correlation relationship between expression status of HER2 and serum FT4(P=0.532);there was no correlation relationship between expression status of ER,PR,HER2,Ki67 and serum T4,FT3,T3,TSH(p>0.05).There exist linear regression relationship between FT4 and ER, PR, Ki67(p=0.047,p=0.031,p=0.024); but FT4 have no linear regression relationship with HER2(p=0.549).Conclusion1. The levels of FT4 and T4 in breast cancer patients are lower than the control samples, meanwhile the levels of TSH are higher than the control group.2.there is a positive correlation relationship between expression status of ER,PR,Ki67 and serum FT4 in breast cancer group.3.Expression status of ER, PR and Ki67 in breast cancer group is the influence factors of serum FT4 level changes.4. Low thyroid function may be a dangerous factor for the development of breast cancer. However, larger sample and multi-center clinical trials are needed to support this point.5. The thyroid hormone level might be a independent factor to appraise the treatment and to predict the prognosis of breast cancer.
