Sterilization technology based on electron beam irradiation is a kind of new food storage sterilization technology, which has the advantages of high efficiency,energy-saving and environmental protection. This technology has a wide range of applications in the field of chemical products sterilization, food sterilization, medical products sterilization and environmental pollution. However, it has not been used in the storage of Chinese medicinal materials. At the present time, sulfur-fumigation is widely used in the storage of Chinese medicinal herbs, but it is easy to produce toxic residues which seriously harm people's health. In this paper, the electron beam irradiation is applied to storage the Flos Lonicerae. The aims of the paper are to set an effective storage technology for Chinese herbal medicine to replace sulfur-fumigation, and provide technical support for its wide application in the field of traditional Chinese medicine.Electron beam irradiation was used to process Flos Lonicerae under different irradiation dose(1.5,3.0,4.5,6.0,7.5 k Gy), and was compared with sulfur-fumigation process and drying process. The storage effects after irradiation and the storage of 120 days were investigated from the sterilization effect, medicine quality and sensory change.(1) Sterilization effect : with the increase of irradiation dose, the number of microorganism in Flos Lonicerae significantly reduced. When the radiation dose was in the range of 4.5 ~ 7.5 k Gy, the aerobic bacteria, resistance bile salt gram negative bacteria, yeast and mold could be completely killed. After the storage of 120 days. the number of the aerobic bacteria, resistance bile salt gram negative bacteria, yeast and mold in Flos Lonicerae significantly decreased.(2) Quality of Chinese medicine: after 0~7.5 k Gy dose of irradiation process. the content of chlorogenic acid and galuteolin in Flos Lonicerae did not change significantly(P<0.05), and it had no significant difference after the storage of 120 days. The sulfur-fumigation process had an obvious effect on the content of chlorogenic acid in FlosLonicerae.(3) Sensory evaluation: after 0~7.5 k Gy dose of irradiation process, the Flos Lonicerae did not show significant differences(P<0.05) in terms of odor and color, which guaranteed its sensory quality. At the same time, the Flos Lonicerae with sulfur fumigation process turned into dark color. Its own peculiar smell disappeared, and smelled sour.
