| Background and Aims :Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia in the elderly. With the accelerated aging trend of the population and the increased prevalence of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, coronary heart disease and other cardiovascular related diseases, the incidence of atrial fibrillation is in a continuing elevated trend in the world. Many foreign studies found that AF is able to increase the risk of non-vascular cognitive impairment and make it worse.Morever, cognitive impairment will influence the patient’s quality of life, aggravate economic burden of family and society,so more and more people begin to concern about it.Therefore this study collected general information of patients with and without atrial fibrillation, all patients underwent mini-mental state examination and montreal cognitive assessment in order to investigate the relevance about atrial fibrillation and cognitive impariment. Methods:Case group included 99 patients with a diagnosis of AF and control group included 99 patients without AF,two groups were matched with age, gender and degree of education.Collected general information and result of accessory examinations. All patients underwent mini-mental state examination and montreal cognitive assessment, compare the cognitive function between case group and control group.Results:1)In case group 30 subjects(30.3%)obtained cognitive impairment, while only 18 subjects(18.2%)obtained cognitive impairment with Mini Mental State Examination(p < 0.001).2)With montreal cognitive assessment,90 subjects(90.9%)obtained cognitive impairment, while only 73subjects(73.7%)obtained cognitive impairment(p < 0.001).Two cognitive function examination results showed an increased prevalence of cognitive impairment in patients with atrial fibrillation. Conclusion:Atrial fibrillation is an independent risk factor for cognitive impairment. |
