| Objective: The relationship between serum adiponectin levels and carotid artery atherosclerosis in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)was analysized to investigate the possible role of adiponectin in the pathogenesis of T2 DM and its macrovascular complications. Methods: One hundred and twenty seven subjects were enrolled and divided into three groups. There are 39 cases in simple T2 DM group(T2DM group),48 cases in T2 DM with carotid artery atherosclerosis group(T2DM with CAAS group)and 40 cases in normal control group(NC group).Serum levels of adiponectin were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA),fasting plasma glucose(FPG),glycosylated hemoglobin(Hb A1c),triglyceride(TG),total cholesterol(TC),low density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C),high density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C),homocysteine(Hcy)and uric acid(UA)were also measured.Color Doppler Ultrasonic Diagnostic System was used to detect the blood vessels of carotid including the intima-media membrane and plaques. Results: BMI,FBG,HbA1 c,TC and LDL-C were significantly higher, while HDL-C were lower in T2 DM group and T2 DM with CAAS group than those in NC group(P<0.05,respectively).Diabetic course,BMI,Hb A1 c,TG,TC,Hcy were obviously higher, while HDL-C were significantly lower in T2 DM with CAAS group than those in T2 DM group(P<0.05,respectively).The serum adiponectin levels in T2 DM with CAAS group were significantly lower compared with T2 DM group and NC group.(3.19±1.06 ug/m L vs 4.35±0.75 ug/m L,and 3.19±1.06 ug/m L vs 7.42±1.30 ug/m L,P<0.001,respectively).Serum adiponectin levels were negatively correlated with diabetic course,FPG and IMT,while positively correlated with HDL-C levels.Logistic regression analysis revealed that hypoadiponectinemia,TC and Hcy were risk factors of carotid artery atherosclerosis in patients with T2 DM.Conclusions: Adiponectin may play an important role in the pathogenesis of T2 DM and its macrovascular complications.Low adiponectin level is a risk factor of carotid artery atherosclerosis in patients with T2 DM,which indicated that increasing serum adiponectin levels may be help for treatment in T2 DM patients with macroangiopathy. |
