PurposeTo evaluate the Effect of MTAD as a irrigating agent on the removal of smear layer and apical closure after root canal filling.Methods36 human premolars extracted for periodontal disease or orthodontic reasons were collected, their crowns removed and the working length of canal was unified to be 16 mm.The teeth were divided into 3 groups as group A(NS),group B(1.3%NaC10+MTAD)and group C(5%NaCIO + 15%EDTA)with 12 samples each according to the different irrigating agent,.The canals were prepared and irrigated with one of the three different irrigating agent respectively.Four samples of each group were split longitudinally and a scanning electron microscope was used to observe the smear layer and exposure.Microleakage of root canals was measured with a fluid transport study for the other 8 samples one week after filling. The valve of microleakage of root canal after post space preparation of all samples was measured again.SPSS 19.0 software package was used for statistical analysis.ResultsIn group A,dentin tubules were blocked by a remaining smear layer. When treated in Group B and C,smear layer were absent and the dentin tubules were exposed. After root canal filling, the valve of micro-leakage of root canal was measured twice after post space preparation, significant difference on microleakage was found between group A and group B,group B and group C(P<0.05),but no difference was found between groupBand C(P>0.05).ConclusionsMTAD can remove the smear layer and significantly improve the sealability of root canals after filling.
