Part 1 Prognosis significance of serum lactate dehydrogenase level inbreast cancerObjective The purpose of this study was to explore the prognosis properties of serum lactate dehydrogenase levels in patients with breast cancer. Methods We searched the PubMed and Embase databases for relevant literature and pooled hazard ratios(HRs)with 95% confidence intervals(CIs)of overall survival(OS),progression-free survival(PFS),and median survival time(MST)were calculated to evaluate the prognostic role of LDH in breast cancer. Results Twenty studies published between 1987 and 2015 with 7404 patients were included for this study. The pooled HRs associated with high LDH level were identified as follows: overall survival,1.61(95% CI 1.46–1.77);PFS,1.22(95% CI 1.06–1.41);MST,1.97(95% CI 1.59–2.44).Conclusion Breast cancer patients with high LDH level were likely to have worse OS,PFS,and MST.Thus,we concluded that high level of serum LDH is significantly associated with bad outcome, serum LDH level may be used as a predictor of prognosis for patients with breast cancer no matter for metastasis or non-metastasis ones and that more attentions should be paid towards the clinical properties of serum LDH.Part 2 Clinical significance of serum lactate dehydrogenase level in I-III stage breast cancerObjective The aim of this study is to investigate the clinical significance of serum lactate dehydrogenase(LDH)level in I-III stage breast cancer. Methods In this retrospective study,we collected data on patient characteristics including age, sex, hormone receptor status,T stage,N stage, clinical stage, pathology and pre-treatment serum LDH level,post-treatment serum LDH level. We analyzed relevant data to find the link between pre-treatment serum LDH level and patient characteristics and compare pre-treatment serum LDH level to post-treatment serum LDH level. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS software. Results Four hundred and forty six patients contributed to this retrospective study,pre-treatment serum LDH level show significance differences in age, hormone receptor status.Comparing to pre-treatment serum LDH level, serum LDH level declined sharply when operation or chemotherapy was finished. While comparing to pre-chemotherapeutic serum LDH level, serum LDH level rose markedly when chemotherapy was finished. An obvious increase of serum LDH level was observed when there was recurrence or metastasis. Conclusion Serum LDH level reflects the tumor burden, many factors such as age, hormone receptor status, operation and chemotherapy produced an effect on LDH level. While the correlation between T stage,N stage, clinical stage and serum LDH level were unclear, more efforts were needed to find the correlation out.
