Objective:To investigate the epidemiological characteristics of patients with space infections in the head and neck and assess the incidence, risk factors, treatment, and outcomes of life-threatening complications of space infections in the head and neck. Methods:A retrospective review of patients admitted to The Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University from 2010-09 to 2017-12 was carried out and the medical records were analyzed,in which there were 48 patients with life-threatening complications.Results:282 patients with space infections in the head and neck were treated and analyzed. The number of males was 163 and the number of females was 119.The most common cause was odontogenic infection(73.05%).The submandibular space was the space most commonly involved in space infections.48 patients with life-threatening complications of space infections in the head and neck were analyzed.Respiratory tract obstruction(75%)was the most frequent life-threatening complications. The patients who have older age(P=0.0001)and underlying systemic disease(P=0.0037),and the white blood cell count>15*10^9/L(P=0.0018)can more commonly develop the risk of life-threatening complications of space infections. Conclusions:The space infection in the head and neck is a common disease of the maxillofacial region. The most common cause was odontogenic infection. The submandibular space was the space most commonly involved in space infections. The patients who have older age and underlying systemic disease, and the white blood cell count>15*10^9/L can more commonly develop the risk of life-threatening complications of space infections. In the treatment of the space infection in the head and neck,we should keep the respiratory tract unobstructed first on the basis of the judgement of the severity of infection, then take surgical incision and drainage and treat the primary lesion, and antibiotics should be applied rationally with systemic support therapy.
