Objective: To clarify the clinical significance of serum YKL-40 level in children and adults with allergic rhinitis(AR).Methods: A total of 36 AR patients(18 males and 18 females, ages 9-52 years, mean age of 24.94 ± 10.98 years)were assigned to the experimental group.AR patients aged<18years were considered as children(13 cases),and those ages≥18 as adults(23 cases).Then5 normal adults(3 males and 2 females, ages 25-37 years, mean age of 30.8±4.58 years)were assigned to the control group. The double-antibody sandwich ELISA was performed to test the YKL-40 level of peripheral blood serum.SPSS 24.0 was used for statistical analysis. Results: The median level of serum YKL-40 among three groups(107.44 ng/L in AR children,60.19 ng/L in AR adults and 71.38 ng/L in normal adults)showed significant difference(P=0.001).Between-group comparison showed that the serum YKL-40 level in AR children was obviously higher than that in AR adults(P<0.001)and that in normal adults(P=0.046).However,the serum YKL-40 levels in AR adults and normal adults showed no significant difference(P=0.264).Conclusion: Serum YKL-40 level may change as the age rises. But whether YKL-40 participates in the early stage of AR pathogenesis needs to be evidenced.
