With more and more foreign students at home and abroad learning Chinese,Chinese test, which is used to stimulate further Chinese learning, has attracted researchers' attention. Computerized adaptive test, as an important part of computer aided instruction, is efficient in tailoring test items for each testee at various performance levels. Chinese computerized adaptive test as a trend is attracting more and more attention. However, the researches on this field and the related researches on multilevel item bank for computerized adaptive Chinese vocabulary test are still in the initial stage. Besides, although vocabulary test plays an important role in language learning, there are not many authoritative Chinese vocabulary test in China.Computerized Adaptive Chinese Vocabulary Test system caters for the need of foreign students to learn Chinese and check their Chinese lexical competence. The present Computerized Adaptive Chinese Vocabulary Test is a three-level test, designed by computer testing system and item bank construction team in Hunan University. It aims to justify foreign students' Chinese vocabulary level and make them well prepared for their study or work by using Chinese. However, as the initial version of the test, the three-level Chinese vocabulary item bank is relatively simple for computerized adaptive test. The present study aims to propose an improved version for the multilevel item bank for Computerized Adaptive Chinese Vocabulary Test. The three-level item bank will be expanded to five levels in this thesis.The tester team, composed of the author and five SIT students led by Professor Xiao Yunnan, revised the test syllabus and specifications and added new items to form a five-level item bank to solve the problems in the three-level item bank. The sample test has been proved valid and reliable in the pilot test. Chinese vocabulary level of the five-level item bank is built on the vocabulary levels of Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages, and the new HSK. The whole test including five parts will classify testees into five corresponding levels. With the increase of item difficulty, the proportion of high level vocabulary will also rise. On the basis of the three-level item bank, the new five-level item bank is added two sections and four item types, enlarging the testing range and promoting the test discrimination. In addition, to guarantee equation of the items, some measures have been taken. First, the tester team made a consistent vocabulary level standard built on the New HSK vocabulary syllabus.Second, the tester team made Developing Chinese, a textbook commonly used at homeand abroad for Chinese teaching as a second language, as a basic material source. Third,the tester team made a detailed and feasible test specification. In this specification, the number and category of the target words at each level and the difficulty of material resources for each part all have been defined.CAT on Chinese test as a trend is becoming more and more of the attraction.However, the research on this field and the building of Chinese vocabulary multilevel item bank is still in the beginning stage. The significance of the thesis lies in that it serves as a blueprint for the research on computerized adaptive Chinese vocabulary multilevel item bank. However, as a preliminary plan, the five-level Chinese vocabulary test system may also have some problems that need to be solved in the future.
