Redundancy is one of the inherent features of language, for every language genre possesses redundancy to some degree. It is irrefutable that in inter-lingual communication redundancy is a powerful tool to overcome the external interference, thus more and more scholars have turned to the study of redundancy. International Business Contract as a formal legal document is endowed with various redundancy among different levels to comply with the formality and solemnity of legal English. Appropriate amount of redundancy can not only add predictability of the text, but also play an active part in the reliability and validity of the translation. On the basis of Relevance Theory and the principle of optimal relevance, the author of this thesis analyses the reasons behind redundancy, the functions redundancy performs and the manifestations of redundancy in International Business Contract, and proposes some practical techniques that make the informative and communicative intention consistent with the expectation and the language-cultural convention of the target reader to achieve a redundancy balance and optimal relevance. According to the above-mentioned analysis, the author draws a conclusion that with a thorough command of the cognitive context of both original text and target text, the translator shall select appropriate translation techniques to make the redundant information of source text conform to the language characteristics of target text and the expectations of target reader with the least processing effort so as to achieve optimal relevance.
