Business interpretation is the instant oral transmission of the message contained in language,a highly contextual dynamic communicative process;while Relevance Theory analyzes the dynamic contexts of a communication,so it can soundly support business interpretation theoretically. This paper aims to research the achievement of optimal relevance in business interpretation.Relevance Theory holds that human communication is a kind of activity that has intention as well as an ostensive-inferential process, that during the communication process, the speaker expresses utterance stimulus while the listener makes inference using his or her relevant cognition. And optimal relevance is one of the major principles of Relevance Theory,i.e.,every act of ostensive communication implies a presumption of its own optimal relevance. The prerequisite for achieving optimal relevance is for the listener to find the meaning intended by the speaker without unnecessary effort;what is said should be understandable. Moreover, interpretation is a communicative activity and an ostensive-inferential process,as business English interpreters have a connecting role to play in communication: interpreters first should infer the speaker's communicative intention with the help of their language accumulation and subject knowledge;and then interpreters ought to fully take listeners' cognitive contexts into consideration, combine logic information, make relevant presumptions, and strive to yield optimal relevance.Using Relevance Theory, this paper analyzes some business interpretation examples to explore whether and how they achieve optimal relevance. This research intends to facilitate the development of business English interpretation and provide theoretic instructions for it.
