Conversation Analysis Of Conflict Talks In TV Talk Shows

With the development of economy and society,interpersonal relationship has become increasingly close.Nowadays,the theme of the world is harmony,which is the inherent requirement of the development of human society and human development.However,the existence of conversation will be accompanied by the existence of conflict.As a common social phenomenon,conflict can be seen everywhere,which requires us to better control and resolve contradictions and conflict and to accelerate the harmonious development of interpersonal relationship.Because of different education,different social status,gender and other factors,the two parties involved in the same problem or the same events will hold different views and opinions,which can result in dispute,argument or quarrel,etc.,thus conflict talk occurs.Due to the semi-institutional nature,talk show has the characteristics of daily conversation and institutional discourse,so it is very meaningful to study the conflict talk in talk show.This paper aims to analyze the basic characteristics of conflict talk in collected data from China’s TV talk show “Yang Lan One on One”.Based on the conversation analysis,this paper adopts a qualitative analysis method to analyze the typical examples of conflict talk in “Yang Lan One on One” in 2015.In order to ensure the objectiveness of the collected data,all the data are download and collected from relevant websites.The study on conflict talk mainly concentrate on two issues:(1)What are the development stages of conflict talk?(2)What strategies are used by participants in the talk show to mitigate or resolve conflicts?Through the analysis of these typical examples,the author finds that: In the initiation stage,conflict talk is mainly caused by the disagreement in the views of the participants;in the maintenance and escalation stage,participants usually use the interruption,evasion,repetition and negation to maintain and escalate the conflict talk;in the termination stage,participants usually use the way of intervention of the third party and topic-shifting.Conflict management strategy mainly introduces two strategies,one is humor and the other is rhetorical questions.Through a comprehensive analysis of collected data,the author finds that conflict talk is an essential part of the talk show,which makes the program more dramatic,and helps attract the audience’s interest.
