On Patterns Of Conflict Talk In Chinese Sitcom Wu Lin Wai Zhuan

Conflict talk is universally considered to be a common phenomenon which occurs here and there in our daily life. However, conflict talk is a complex language phenomenon. Nowadays, more and more scholars on their way to make out what conflict talk is; what causes conflict talk; what features conflict talk has, as well as other relevant questions about conflict talk. From the narrow sense, conflict talk is a kind of speech act, which is a kind of arguments, disputes, oppositions and other similar communicative forms. You can find there is a common feature among them. There are two or more participants, and the participants both hold different opinions, which result in bad communication against each other.The thesis paper studied conflict talk which was related to the fields such as anthropology, sociolinguistics, and ethnography. Frankly speaking, it is a little difficult for the author to do the research on conflict talk, because there are not so many researches on conflict talk in the linguistic area up to now, and most people consider it as a kind of disorderly language usage. Indeed, it is a kind of complicated language phenomenon which covers different aspects. The studies on conflict talk abroad are limited, and the researches are not a systematic study on it. Compared with the study abroad, the study on conflict talk in China is even far from being thoroughly conducted. Therefore, China has a long way to go in the study of conflict talk.In the thesis, I analyzed the conflict talk from the macro perspective and from the analysis of the data. I found there are two patterns in conflict talk. One includes two moves, and the other includes three moves. One pattern is formed by excitation move and intensification move. In the other pattern, it is formed by excitation move, intensification move and mollification move. According to different objective factors and interlocutors'attitude, interlocutors use different patterns to complete their conflict talk. Though the data are collected from a sitcom, the study can shed light on the research on the actual conflict talk in our daily life.The thesis paper is expected to reveal a macro perspective on conflict talk, and to present a more systematic view of the complicated language phenomenon. In addition, I hope that more and more scholars can pay their attention to the complicated language phenomenon, and show us a clearer picture of conflict talk.
