This dissertation is a translation report on the English-Chinese translation of first chapter of The History of Rome,a book written German historian. History of Rome is an important part of European history. It is also a frequently mentioned subject in modern arts and literature. Translation as a bridge between human communication,social progress, its importance can not be ignored. Historical translation as branch of translation, still holds a irreplaceable position in today's economy-oriented society.Combined with translation techniques, this dissertation probes into the translation process with the guidance of functional equivalence theory.The dissertation can be divided into 6 parts. The first part described about origin of the translation project, and the research purpose. The second part analyzed the features of source text. This part emphasized the science function of The History of Rome. The third part introduced the supporting theory of the translation practice, which is the functional equivalence theory of Eugene A.Nina. The fourth part described the processing tactic and emphasized the importance of correlative knowledge bank which can be regarded as a useful tool helping to achieve functional equivalence. The fifth part described the translation skills used during the translation and tried to draw some useful experience for historical translation. The sixth part of dissertation is the conclusion and talked about the experience gained from the project.
