It is a common phenomenon in our society that the names of streets and alleys in the city are always based on the geographical positions of the places. The names at the same time are coming into the special historical documents for the development of the city and have local features with deep cultural connotation. These kind of features are especially obvious in the minority areas. So the naming of streets and alleys have become the weather vane of the linguistic culture.The names of streets and alleys in Hohhot are the objects of this sociolinguistic study. The research will base on the statistic survey and scientific analysis. In the chapter of introduction are the following Information included, such as the meanings of the research, the introduction of the objects, the fields of the study, the research actuality, the general development situation and evolution of history and geography in Hohhot. The second chapter will analyze the phonetic and structural features of the naming in the view of linguistics. The syllable and the patterns of level and oblique tones are taking into consideration in the area of phonetic; The general names and the proper names in the fields of language structure are been analyzed concretely. The third chapter will search the cultural meanings of the names. The culture in the specific period of the history, the social culture with the features of industry, the geographical culture and the ethnic traditional culture are included in the research. The ethnic traditional culture is the key object of the analysis. The naming of streets and alleys is a cultural feature and the national psychology of Hohhot as a ethnic minority area. The fourth chapter will analyze the historical evolution and try to find out the reasons of the development in the field of following three parts:the still using names, the changing of the old names and the naming of the streets and alleys. In chapter five will analyze briefly the translations of the street signs, point out the problems in the translation of street signs and put forward some feasible suggestions. The last chapter is the conclusion of the article.
