English has been more and more vital in the development of the social and economic globalization. It is widely used as the internalization of China.However, college students, learning English for ten years or so, are still far from the good command of English. In college English classroom, most students are still keeping negative silent instead of improving their English.So it is necessary to know the reasons of students' keeping negative silent.The study explores college students' negative silence through questionnaires, classroom observations and interviews of students and teachers. The subjects of the study are 200 college non-English majors' freshmen from Baotou teachers' college. The questions of the study are:(1).To what extent do the college non-English majors keep negative silent in English classroom?(2). What are the main causes of the college non-English majors keeping negative silent in English classroom?The study combines both quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis.First, PASW 17.0 is used to analyze questionnaire, and then classroom observations are summarized. At last, the results of data are illustrated with interviews of students and teachers.The results of the data show that college non-English majors' negativesilence degree gets to a higher level, which indicates over 50% students keeping negative silent in English classroom and students' negative silence is rather serious in English classroom. The main factors that cause the students' negative silence from the aspects of students' output, affection and interaction,include the students' English proficiency, the students' learning motivation,the students' self-confidence, the students' learning anxiety, the students' view of Chinese culture, and the students' belief of participating in classroom.Based on the above findings, some implications are concluded. First, students' practice should be strengthened and their self-confidence should be established gradually with the teachers' help in and out of the classroom. The teachers need to give positive assessments to students' performance which can help them to participate in English classroom actively and improve their English proficiency. Then students need to encourage themselves and try to participate in more activities in English classroom. They can set up some reasonable learning plans either in long-term or short-term according to their own situation. Then make some progress gradually to overcome the anxiety and stimulate the motivation. At last, students' belief of participating in English classroom needs to be improved and the interaction forms need to be improved to enhance students' enthusiasm and to break students' negative silence eventually.
