Intertextuality originates from linguistic theory in 20 th century, and begins from linguistic theory of Saussure who comes from Switzerland in large extent. Thus, Intertextuality theory achieved a plenty of developed motivation from Bakhtin's dialogic theory. Saussure believed that language is a system which consists of reciprocal discrepant semiotics, semiotic forms and achieves meanings from connections related between other semiotics, which means the meaning of semiotic only exists in the relation and discrepancy among other semiotics, so the development of intertextuality traces from the period which language is regarded as a theory that system consists of reciprocal discrepant semiotics.Bakhtin pays much attention to the social context of language activity which differs from Saussure's theory a lot. Bakhtin(1981) considers that literary discourse is dialogue comes from many literary works. All the discourses have the intertextuality and dialogism, which refer to the presence and interaction of different voices in utterance or discourse, and reflect a specific social reality or ideological stance, which align the social stance with the different social context. The basic composition of this social phenomenon which forms language is not made up by isolated words, sentences or the individual language users, but it is considered as a kind of utterance of social activity. Intertextuality research aims at the literary works frequently, however the intertextuality of academic discourse is seldom researched.Appraisal theory research the negotiation of different attitudes, and the expression of speaker or discourse at level of interpersonal meaning, which includes attitude, engagement and graduation subsystem. The engagement system reflects the relationship between the voice of author and other voice, which influenced by Bakhtin's intertextuality and dialogism. The language users put different attitudes on the evaluation of figures and events by employing the expression of language. This thesis combines intertextuality, dialogism, engagement and academic discourse, which aims at analyzing and researching the distributional regular and the situation of engagement as well as how the author employing the resources to making the interaction with other voices better, by combining the 17 academic discourses published in the foreign academic periodicals.
