A Report On The Translation Of Ohio Rules Of Civil Procedure(Chapter 1-3)

This is a report on the translation of Ohio Rules of Civil Procedure(Chapter 1-3). These rules involve the regulations on the civil procedures in Ohio, intending to guarantee the smooth progress of civil action. In the translation material of Ohio Rules of Civil Procedure(Chapter 1-3), three main thematic progression patterns are found, i.e., continuous pattern, intersection pattern, and parallel pattern. Through comparative analysis of the differences in the thematic progression patterns between Chinese and English legislative texts, and based on the specific examples cited from the translation material, this translation report discusses the translation skills in respect to thematic progression patterns. Specifically, in respect of continuous pattern, the author proposes that the text should be translated according to thematic progression pattern in the original text, i..e, literal translation shall apply; As to intersection patterns, the progression pattern adopted in the original text should be adjusted, so as to embody the topic-prominent feature of Chinese; As regards parallel patterns, the author suggests that the original text be translated based on the original logical order.Thematic progression patterns have great influence on the text structure, information distribution, and logical order between sentences, as a result, analyzing thematic progression patterns before translating the text is vital, in that it enables an overall understanding of the outline and key points of the original text; meanwhile, during the process of translation, having a clear understanding of thematic progression patterns can help to realize the smoothness and coherence of the text in the target language. In this sense, this research can serve as useful reference for the translation of similar texts.
