The standards of legal translation are stricter than other kinds. In order to handle the unpredictable situations in human activities, law tends to grow more complicated. How to accurately understand the law and translate it into the target language presents a big challenge to the translators. The author chose the US “Federal Rules of Civil Procedures”(2006) as the material for doing the translation. With the aim of achieving better translation, the author applied theories of legal logics to categorize all the rules of the US “Federal Rules of Civil Procedures” into proposition of norm and proposition of nature in the hope of overcoming some difficulties of understanding the source text. With that understanding in mind, the author has compared the models of thematic progression in the source language and in the target language, has put forward some ideas of improving translation, hoping to enlighten other translators.
