Mo Yan is the first Chinese writer to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, but his achievement should owe to the good translation of Howard Goldblatt, with which both the name of Mo Yan and his works are able to get the appeal of the world readers. The charm of Mo Yan's works attributes to their characteristics of native Chinese culture on one hand. On the other hand, it owes to the creative application of magic realism style in his works. All of them exemplify the infinite charm of Chinese original ecology and culture. The writing technique Magical realism comes from Latin America, one of its characteristics is that it reflects the social reality of Latin America with distinctive local color. The principle is that it changes reality into fantasy without distortion. In a certain way it is affected by the European and American Modernism literature, because it adopts the writing technique of the symbolism, surrealism and stream of consciousness. Mo Yan takes the local culture of his hometown as the materials, and successfully merges them with Latin magic realism into his works. Big Breasts and Wide Hips is one of Mo Yan's masterpieces that is written for his mother. Yet the scholars mainly stress the equivalence between language and culture, but they ignore the creative ways and styles of the translation. Translator is the subject of translation process. It is the subject of recreating at the same time. The Hermeneutics translation ideas that Steiner has proposed can in some way explain this process and phenomenon. Interpretation depends on understanding,so does translation.Steiner's hermeneutic motion takes into consideration all the factors that affect the translation process including the importance of translator. The translator chooses theorigin and trusts them, then enters into the origin violently. Understanding means translation. In the step of incorporation, the translator expresses his thought in the translation. In order to keep balance, the translator needs to adopt proper translation methods to make up for the loss. This research makes an interpretation to the translation of Big Breasts and Wide Hips and explores the interpretation and representation of translation for the magic realism of origin. The first part of this thesis is introduction. It briefly describes the basic structure of the research, background, and significance. The second part is the literature review, offering a brief review of the studies on the works of Mo Yan, the translations of Mo Yan's works that are translated by Goldblatt and Steiner's translation theory. The third part gives an introduction to the characteristics of magical realism in Mo Yan's work and then analysis to the magical characters, magical plots and magical narration in Big Breasts and Wide Hips. The fourth part is the analysis of the magic realism in the translation of Big Breasts and Wide Hips by using Steiner's hermeneutic motion. At last concludes that: one of the most important factors when we translated the works of Mo Yan is the interpretation and reconstruction of unique method of original works, which is to ensure the basic artistic appeal of the translation and one of the major issue to help Chinese literature go out onto the world stage.
