Thomas Hardy is a well-known English writer whose works have been considered as classics in China as well.Media Studies in Comparative Literature and statistical method are adopted to analyze the canonization of Hardy's novels in China so as to provide readers with a comprehensive view of the process.Based on Paul Van Tieghem's theory, the author explores more to analyze the process in the latest social environment, that is,the teacher medium, the higher education medium which consists of foreign literature history texts and book list references. And problems in each medium come into sight after discussion. At the time of Hardy's first introduction to China, the early introducers and group have made great contribution to the spreading of Hardy's fame.As for translated works, whether they are full and correct is discussed by studying both the prefaces and texts so as to know the“changes” made by translators, which helps to explore translator's subjectivity. In the criticism medium, knowledge mapping of domains shows that though the number of essays increases fast, problems of simplex and lacking innovation are common to see.Researchers should adopt new criticism methods and combine the novels' meaning with the present condition of China.Fortunately, the classic status of Hardy's novels in higher education has been strengthened by involving them in textbooks of history of foreign literature. However, the introduction of them still belongs to the general kind that couldn't leave a profound impression on students. Thus compilers may update the present writing model of history of foreign literature, change the generalizing way and give more comments on text.Besides,it is a good way to let experts write their parts like western countries so as to ensure the reliability and quality of the description. It is also essential to absorb the latest findings in Hardystudies and digest new literary criticism theories, offering readers diverse and critical explanations of Hardy's novels and adding proper original text excerpts. As for the film and television adaptations, the releases in China are far from enough, which have the potential to harvest more fruit. The analysis of the topic offers experience in promoting the introduction of Chinese classics overseas. We can attract individual and group media, such as foreign students, and open Chinese classics class for them.Besides,to give intense support for the Confucius Institutes and promote the translation of classics as well as film adaptations are good ways to introduce Chinese classics overseas.Thomas Hardy, who lives in an era when industrialism invades rural traditional life, depicts vivid pictures of pastoral life and people in that turbulent current.China is undergoing social transformation and we could learn something from Hardy's works.
