Water is the source of life, production and ecological basis. The Chinese have a good tradition of paying great attention on the construction of water conservancy projects since ancient times. Many famous water control projects have been built and many of them are still used in irrigation and used as source of drinking water. The idea of "Harmony between man and nature", "harmony between man and water" was used in design, and construction and management of many ancient water conservancy projects. These ideas can be used in the modern times.Chatanbei, an ancient water conservancy project, is located in Taihe county of Jiangxi province. It was constructed in NanTang dynasty during 937-975. Although was built one thousand years ago, it still plays a good function of irrigation. Through field surveys, data collecting and visits of experts and administrative departments, Chatanbei water conservancy heritage is found to be valuable in history, society and scientific research.Nonetheless, the current situation of this heritage makes people worried, especially its lacking of protection measures. This study makes suggestions of protective development of Chatanbei through profound comparison and experience and lessons learned from domestic water conservancy heritage protection. Development in protection and utilization in development, this study intends to make Chatanbei ancient water conservancy heritage inherit the old and the new, and continuously benefit people like thousands of years ago.Meanwhile, the paper aims to provide reference to design and planning of modern water conservancy project and excavate scientific management theory and inheriting manners which are worth learning and promoting. The ecological tourism function of Chatanbei is also discussed in this thesis.
