This report is a review on the translation of Society in China (Chapter 18 to Chapter22). The book of Society in China describes China, the mystery and complex society, from the upper classes to the common people, from politics, economy to daily life, involving all aspects of Chinese society. And this book became the precious material for western society realizing China. The book covers a very wide range, and it described the Qing dynasty era of Chinese society from many aspects, like the Emperor, the Court, the Government, the Qing law, the horticulture, tourism, food, clothing, the Emperor's faults and weaknesses, officials of greed and act arbitrarily, people's ignorance, superstition and so on.Society in China, which belongs to travel books, gives a brief introduction of Chinese society from the perspective of western missionaries, and the language is dominated by narration and description. In view of its language features, the author take the skopos theory and applied translation as the guiding principles for this translation practice, trying to satisfy the requirement of the target readers.This translation report mainly includes five parts:the first part is about the background knowledge. The translated text will be discussed from the introduction of the book, the author, and for the language features, it will be discussed from lexical and syntactic level. The second part is the introduction of the task process, which includes text analysis and literature reading. The third part includes the skopos theory and applied translation studies. The fourth part is case analysis, introducing the translation difficulties and the translation strategies from lexical and syntactic level respectively. The fifth part, the shortcomings of the translation practice is summarized and practical suggestions are provided for future translation work.By summarizing the translation experience of Society in China, the author hopes to make a contribution to the translation study and give some enlightenment to other translators by the experience. Moreover, the author hopes to gain some translation skills through the translation experience, deepen the understanding of translation theories and develop the applying ability of translation skills.
