The research on memory consolidation is of great significance in the visual working memory(VWM)on how information is represented and processed into memory system.Previous researches suggested that there should be a limit to the rate at which items can be consolidated in the VWM.Some results show that for different stimulus information,the brain may exist different cement processing mode.But previous research on two kinds of color,texture information were tested Besides,no relevant studies on what kinds of mechanisms do other types of information(shape,size et al)in visual working memory consolidation have been reported.In the present experiments,we aimed to investigate memory consolidation with those kinds of information,in different aspects.We manipulated three experiments by using masked change detection paradigm to investigate the consolidate mechanisms of shape,size and color items.In Experiment 1,we took black bar as memory items,participants were asked to view two oriented bars displayed either sequentially or simultaneously and report whether they have changed in direction.The results showed that performance was greater for the sequential presentation than for the simultaneous condition,and the spatial distribution of memory items influenced subjects’ memory effect.In Experiment 2,the procedure was the same as in Experiment 1 except that different sizes of black rings were used as memory items to verify consolidation mechanism with the size information.However performance in size was better for simultaneous condition than for sequential condition,which indicated that size consolidation into VWM can occur in parallel and without capacity limits for at least two items.In experiment 3,the procedure was the same as Experiment 1 and 2 except for different shapes(A right triangle,heart,star and hexagon)were used as memory items to verify the shape information consolidation mechanism.Performance in shapes was better for sequential condition than for simultaneous condition,which gave strong support for shape and orientation with a serial process,and memory effect was affected by the stimulus spatial distribution.In this study,we used three experiments to verified the consolidation of VWM,and found that orientation and shape consolidation into VWM is a serial process,while size consolidation is parallel.The study shows that different visual features of VWM consolidation processing has different mechanisms.
