The Study On Chan Buddhism Of Baizhang Huaihai

Baizhang Huaihai is a key figure of the Chinese Chan, who is the disciple of the founder of Hong Zhou Sect, Matsu Daoyi, and also the maker of Jungle Buddhist Monastic Rules of Chan. He developed Linji and Weiyang two lineages. The reasons why Baizhang Huaihai became another Buddhist crucial monk after the Sixth Zen Patriarch Huineng have two aspects. One is the succession and spread of Hongzhou Meditation. The other is the establishment of rules and regulations for Chan. That is an indelible contribution to the Chinese Chan. However, for a variety of reasons, common people attached more importance to the impact on his monastic rules instead of his thoughts. Throughout all of his academic researches, it is the same with this phenomenon. In order to make up the deficiency and declare the significance of Baizhang Huaihai's thoughts in academic study of meditation, individuals' cultivation, as well as the promotion of culture, this paper lays particular emphasis on the research of his meditation, constructing the system of his thoughts, and complemented by the monastic rules.This paper is divided into five chapters, that is five parts. The first chapter is an introduction. From the second chapter to the fourth is the body part, and the fifth chapter is a conclusion. Foreword is an overview of the current situation and research of Baizhang Huaihai and research methods of Chan, and then expounding the purpose of the research topic and three respects that should be paid attention to. Meanwhile, the structure of this article has been briefly provided. In this essay, the social and historical background that the monk experienced and the evolution of Chan have been introduced, which is placed under the entire society and the overall context of Chan. The reason for concentrating on the cause of his enlightenment is to restore the whole process of his practice, in the meantime, analyze the background of the creation for the rules, outline its main contents, relate briefly its significance and impact, and make appropriate inferences.The author argues that the Chan budhism of Baizhang Huaihai is a complete system, including logos, teachings and practices. What logos is called is the theoretical basis of cultivation in sect, also known as the basic insight, which is to refine, evidence, and summarize mainly according to sayings of Patriarch and teachings of Buddhism. The so-called teachings, that is enlightenment methods, refers to the ways that Chan master adopted to channel disciples on the basis of one's radical. The practices is methods of practices, the hard ways during practice and actualization, and the cogent experience. In Monk Baizhang Huaihai's practices, there is not only sermon in theory but also conversion method in response to specific things, and cogent cultivation as well. Both immediate enlightenment and gradual enlightenment, both expediency and truth, are all included in his thoughts; Both skillful enlightenment for abecedarians and pointing enlightenment for those who are knee-deep; Both on test of the enlightenment and on further way to improve; Not only into scriptures in daily practice and understanding but also into the cogent cultivation and introduction. In short, there is big inspiration and guidance no matter to academic research, earnestly practice, or culture spreading.
