Xin Dongwang, born in 1936 at Xinjiafang Village Kangbao County Zhangjiakou City Hebei Province, is one of the representatives of contemporary realist oil painting with his oil painting playing an important role in the contemporary Chinese Art Circle. He prefers to choose lifestyle themes focusing on expression of ordinary people's lives. The paper attempts to reveal the contemporary social issues and cultural phenomenon in-depth via each work by analyzing the formation, development processes, style and features of Xin Dongwang oil painting art. Starting the study from two aspects of content and social care, the author thinks that Xin Dongwang has formed conditions for each other between criticism and creation in his painting works while his realism has revealed the group living status in the case of the Chinese social phenomenon at that time under the background of social reform, developing a new possibility by paintings for ordinary people to give their voice. It mainly consists of four parts:The first part introduces the background of Xin Dongwang oil painting art and his consciousness of problems, focusing on analysis of construction of debate based on works and initiation of consciousness of problems while such consciousness of problems or the art debate is socialized rather than limited to the art circle. The second part discusses the characteristics of Xin Dongwang oil painting art, establishing a critical and creative context or production situation via works. The author believes that Xin Dongwang is constructing the context or situation where the production and mobilization of the new subjective possibilities can be initiated and developed. The third part mainly describes Xin Dongwang's inheritance, innovation, assimilation and reference to the Eastern and Western cultural elements and Western realism; as well as the relationship between painters'creation and Chinese realism. According to him, criticism and creation of art are conditions for each other, because on the one hand, all creation is built based on criticism; and on the other hand, only creation can lead to the art criticism beyond the criticism on content and techniques. As a result, Xin Dongwang has become a typical representative of the Chinese New Realism Art. The fourth part summarizes the creating career of Xin Dongwang who has become an artist of people with his works as his social agenda by perfectly combining his thoughts and feeling with his era. Xin Dongwang thinks realism is "only" a method while his methods and results are equally important to China. His work is a proposal submitted to his society and his era as he has promoted a kind of social progress via his practice. At this level, his work is a kind of spiritual social movement and a kind of social spiritual production. That is to say, Xin Dongwang has expressed the intrinsic life value and human dignity of the marginalized groups under the background of social reform through his painting works in order to arouse the independent review and thinking spirit of public on such social issues so that the social function of realism can be achieved and the realist paintings can bear the responsibility of criticizing social issues. And what more important is to develop the new possibility of giving voice to the marginal subjects by combining works with the era, society and life.
