Zhang Huiyan(1761-1802), whose given name is "Gaowen" and who styled himself as "Mingke", was considered as one of“Eight Great Scholars of Ming and Qing”, in the Confucian classics, Ci poetry, and literary creation has achieved remarkable results. He combined some conceptions of Confucian classics, poem theory with cognition of style of Ci poetry and formed his own Ci poetry theory. His main proposal in Ci poetry is “respective style”, and Ci should be based on its “implication”; the artistic characteristics of Ci should be “graceful and exquisite”; “analogy” should be the way of expression. There is a close connection between his study of Ci poetry and Confucian classics. He believed that poetry and Ci poetry derive from the same thing. So the “respective style” is based on the profound tradition of poetry. Implication comes from his study of the book of change. He studied Ci poetry with the way of the Present Characters Confucianism and proposed that “Ci Poetry roots in feeling, and feeling contains implication. Then it can be moving” in the preface of the Selection of Ci.Zhou Ji, Tan Xian, Chen Tingzhuo, Kuang Zhouyi studied and developed his theory. Zhang Huiyan`s Ci theory, which corrected mistakes of Zhe Ci Poetry Genre and influenced “Four Ci Poets in the Later Qing and Changzhou Poetry School” and Changzhou Ci Poetry Genre, is of both theoretical and practical value.Based on Zhang Huiyan`s Ci poetry, combining our tradition of Ci and the era background, this thesis analyzes his Ci creation deeply. There are three parts in this thesis: idea of the Ci, aesthetics of Ci, the artistic features and the way of expression. The study starts from the analysis of his potential motivation of creation of Ci, then penetrates his idea of the Ci, finally concludes the influence of his theory of Ci. This is a vertical study which includes his life, creation of Ci, and his influence. The idea of Ci is focal point. This research is not only to comb the former theoretical study, but also a widening of the depth of the study. The author hopes it could offer a reference to correlation study.
