E. B. White is one of the most prestigious American essayists and also a well-received writer of children's literature. His three fantasies, Charlotte s Web, Stuart Little and Trumpet of the Swan, are regarded as "the most beloved fairy tale with most readers in the 20th century". Furnished with humorous language and natural writing style, the three works not only pass some positive and optimistic qualities to the readers, but also display high value for literary studies.The three works are seen as typical Bildungsroman, in which the protagonists go through lots of ups and downs and ultimately achieve mental maturity, spiritual sublimation and complete transformation. As is known to all, the American Dream characterized by the pursuit of equality, freedom and happiness has been an indispensible part of the young country's growth and development. As it is, the American Dream serves as the spiritual pivotal of the American people. In a sense, the American Dream which his three fantasies incarnate is worthwhile of further study.This thesis tries to explore the similarities of the protagonists'destiny and closely relate their destiny to the American Dream. By introducing White's own life experiences and referring to historical background and incidents, this thesis further analyzes the inevitable connection between the American Dream and White's protagonists. Firstly, this thesis generally explains the origin and evolution of the American Dream, summarizes the American Dream tradition in the American literature, and then distinguishes it from White's American Dream in Children's literature. Secondly, this paper also analyzes the American Dream elements in three fantasies, namely, the American Dream in pursuit of freedom, the American Dream upholding equality and the American Dream striving for happiness. Thirdly, by comparing with Fitzgerald and Hemingway, this thesis tries to explore the ingenuity of White-style American Dream from the perspective of its contents, language, style and etc. This thesis ends up with the conclusion that White is a master of American Dream and also a pioneer of American spirit.Through the in-depth research of the three works, this thesis further explores the innermost meaning of White's fantasies, thus, perceiving that his children's literary works are a perfect combination of amusement and profundity.
