Based on the analysis of Guo Morou's conception of historical drama and the theatricality, this paper elaborates the relationship between his conceptions and theatricality. In addition, the paper gives a thorough explanation on his theatricality and artistic presentation approaches from different angles,i.e. figures, event, dramatic rhythm and etc;moreover, it also gives comments on Guo's gains and losses during his pursuit of theatricality. The paper can be divided into the following three parts. To begin with, Guo Moruo formed his own historical drama conception in his creation process. Through analyzing the relationship between Guo's conceptions of historical play and theatricality, the author found that Guo advocates emotionalism by using creation principle, which includes “writing poems by using history and play”, “making the past serve the present”, and “putting more emphasis on history spirit”. Through the description of characters' inner emotion and feelings, Guo made all characters live in a world full of conflicting wills under the guidance of their own will, which highlights emotional power. What's more, starting with dramatic approaches, the author analyzed the Guo's dramatic artistic presentation from three aspects, including historical figures, historical events and dramatic rhythm. The idealization and emotion of the character, complex and delicate relationship between the characters, selected dramatic historical events, the event in the development of contingency and suspension of the events will arouse the audiences' emotional resonance. The theatricality reflected in the balanced pace, downplayed character's external conflicts and focus on inner feeling description. Finally, this paper discusses Guo Moruo's gains and losses in his pursuit of theatricality from two aspects, emotionalism and poetic pursuit. Drama's theatricality and emotionality can be fully integrated through creating by emotionalism, the using of poetic pursuit, to some extent, added drama's appeal; however, the author's emotional expression will be restricted through creating by emotionalism, and drama's theatricality will also be played down byexcessive poetic pursuit.
