Pragmatism is the core of contemporary American cultural values. It is inevitable that Pragmatism was formed and developed in the United States. Pragmatism was born in the1870 s, it caused the Civil War and the birth of the people closely related to lack of faith. The pragmatism met the requirement of social development of America and its utility supreme principle had been leading Americans' typical way of thinking and behaving. The culture of American pragmatism's priority is interests. It stresses on reality and human rights, emphasis the power of action while against authority and the aristocratic. Rhett Butler in the novel of‘Gone with the Wind' is a typical image of pragmatism. He admires freedom and ignored the traditional concept of the South part. He is a mercenary and amassed wealth in the Civil War.In the love with Scarlett, Rhett is active and persistent. In brief, Rhett Butler is pragmatic in terms of the philosophy of life, value and love.
