As an important language phenomenon, metaphor has aroused wide attention of scholars in many fields. Grammatical Metaphor is the most important cognitive tool to help people understand the world. The theory of Grammatical Metaphor of Halliday makes the readers deeply understand metaphor is closely related to human cognition. The ideational GM and interpersonal GM are two significant branches under the theoretical framework of GM proposed by Halliday. In 1992, textual GM was brought forward by Martin, and he made some supplement and improvements on Halliday's theory.Doris Lessing is a world-renowned British novelist. Her most important representative work, The Golden Notebook, has aroused great concern since its publication in 1962 and it was awarded for Nobel Prize for literature in 2007. Based on its unique narrative technique and profound theme, scholars domestic and abroad have done much work on it from the perspective of literary criticism, but few explorations from the perspective of linguistics. Based on the theory of GM, this research gives a systematic and specific analysis of the work The Golden Notebook,which makes readers deeply and clearly comprehend the construction of the identity and personality of the characters from the perspectives of ideational grammatical metaphor and interpersonal grammatical metaphor. Thus it will contribute to excavate the deep theme of the work for readers. The character Anna's identity can be reflected through the analysis from the perspective of ideational GM. And at the aspects of interpersonal GM, the traits and relationships of the main characters can be revealed through the analysis of metaphor of mood and metaphor of modality, which can contribute to the language efficacy.It is not only a good trial to combine the theory of Grammatical Metaphor with The Golden Notebook, but provides readers with new angles for exploration and appreciation in this research.
