A Study On The Annotation Of Academic Translation

All translation shares a same purpose, which is trying to deliver source language information and source language culture to target language readers as complete and accurate as possible. Being one indispensable part of social culture makes each language and the culture it carries unique. However, inevitably this kind of uniqueness may throw difficulties to translators. Therefore translators would look into various methods to solve such problems, and adding annotation is one of the most commonly used translation methods.The Moving Text: Localization, Translation, and Distribution is written by internationally well-known scholar Anthony Pym and is an academic work focusing on translation and localization. In the Chinese translation of this book, annotation is applied to settle understanding problems arising from terms and other contents which need extra attention during translation. Putting annotation in the Chinese version of this book as study subject, this thesis digs into various annotation types and characteristics of annotation in academic translation and comes up with three types of annotation in academic translation, which are annotation for terms, annotation for source text language and annotation for background information respectively, and unique features of annotation in academic translation such as briefness, diversity and technicality. And finally this thesis proposes that when adding annotation in academic translation, these three principles of being brief, diverse and professional should be kept in mind to ensure translation being loyal to source language information and culture and deliver the full content of source text to the maximum extent.
