Wangkui Shadow Play is an unique category of Chinese puppetry originated in northeastern region, which is possessed of a flavor of folk customs and characters of religious culture. As a kind of national and world-class intangible cultural heritage in our nation, Wangkui Shadow Play has a significant value on its protection and research. In the field of cultural heritage protection, it is an important research content in innovative protection model to maintain the peculiar enchantment of traditional art when make it more widely spread with digital technology. Thus, this paper reviews the context of the formation and development of Wangkui Shadow Play, then discusses its intrinsic art characteristics in aspects of production process, static modeling and dynamic performing. Based on the facts of protection object, this paper proposes the modern methods of protecting static puppetry modeling arts by modern design theories, as well as the dynamic puppetry performing skills by digital media technology.In the research of static modeling protection of puppetry, this paper focuses on the design elements of Wangkui Shadow Play in application of modern inheritance, and based on the universality of the pictographic structure, semiotic narration and image reference of Chinese puppetry and Chinese chess, we blend Wangkui styling into Chinese chess product, which elaborates the idea and methods of engaging modern design theories in static puppetry modeling.In the research of dynamic performance protection of puppetry, we propose a somatic interactive system, which involves a Kinect depth sensor capturing and identifying the users' body movements to control virtual puppet figures. This study analyzes critical factors in somatic interaction, such as the structure differences and motion characteristics of puppets and the differences between discrete and continuous motions, then we creatively put forward the motion mapping method synthesizing users' motion detection and joint mapping. This article finally employ user study to evaluate the performance of the system in usability, interaction and user experience.
