The Comparative Analysis Of Chinese And Foreign News Reports On Economy From The Perspective Of Critical Metaphor Analysis

Metaphor is a way for human to know the world. Charteris-Black put forward a new metaphor study method--Critical Metaphor Analysis. This method integrates Critical Discourse Analysis and corpus method and incorporates pragmatics and cognitive linguistics to reveal the ideologies behind the metaphor. This paper compares the economic news report between English and Chinese, selects the news reports in Chinese and English news reports as corpus, takes the Critical Metaphor Analysis as the theoretical framework and combines quantitative and qualitative analysis method to reveal the relationship between metaphor and cognition, society and culture through the selection and usage of metaphor.First, metaphors in English and Chinese economic reports are identified. Second, the identified metaphors are classified and compared. A large number of common metaphors are found in the selected English and Chinese corpus. There mainly exist the following eight types: "journey", "human", "war", "disease", "physical and chemical phenomenon", "water movement", "air movement", "game", in addition, the exclusive metaphor "plant" in English and exclusive metaphor "food" in Chinese. Finally, this paper attempts to explain the similarities and differences of the above metaphors from cognitive, social and cultural factors. It shows that human cognition of the world leads to the similar metaphor usages of these two languages, and different social values and culture result in the different metaphor usages between the two languages.By the comparative analysis of metaphor in economic news reports in English and Chinese, this paper aims to provide the readers a deeper understanding of inflation and more enlightenment for metaphor research.
