In the 19 th century, neo-classicism, romanticism, aestheticism, impressionism and realism were in continuous change, and female image in the European paintings was the emphasis to be explored. Furthermore, due to the double identity, the author was both the paint learner and female, who would like to find out the own artistic creation tendency. This paper takes artistic works themed female image as the entry point, which is throughout the whole history. Combined with knowledge of sociology, physiology and iconology related, the paper carries out new interpretations of female image in part of the oil paintings in the 19 th century and reveals the social conditions in different historical periods and social life of females in different cultural levels, which can not only help artists fully show their subjective emotions, but be their ideological carrier. Moreover, they were the reflection of people's ideas at the moment that further represented the symbolic meaning of the female image at that time. Additionally, the paper also illustrates the influence of female arts in modern China.The introduction determines the research significance and objective through the research conditions of the female image in European painting in the 19 th century and the collection of related data, and carries out the interpretation based on certain methods. The main body of the paper divides into four chapters. Chapter 1 starts from the traditional theory to discuss the evolution and origin of the female image, and describes the historical process of the female image. The structure is shown in the artistic works that are sorted out from the perspective of real life, virtual life and private life. Chapter 2 summarizes the characteristics and features of the female image in artistic works and illustrates the psychological course of females being as model and painter in aspects of female image beautified by five clues, desiring female image, suffering female image, laboring and simple female image, as well as the female image in vision of female artists. Chapter 3 analyzes that female image is endowed with symbolic meaning, and illustrates deeper meanings of the female image from art concept, spiritual meaning and passion. Chapter 4 simply tells the influence on female arts in modern China and the personal practice and exploration. Besides, theoretical research on the female image in European paintings in the 19 th century is briefly discussed, and art language will be looked for in creating the female image. The conclusion is the prospect of the female image, and further focus and expectation of the author's idea on female image will be stated.
