Evidentiality,as a linguistic phenomenon,is about the speaker's expression of source of information and his/her commitment to the reliability of information. In recent years,it has attracted more and more attention from linguists and great achievements have been made. With the wide spread of media and Internet, news reporting has become an important way of transmitting information. There are two key factors on reporting news. One is the source of information and the other is the reliability of information. Therefore, the study of evidentiality in discourse is practical and significant. However, few studies have examined the contrastive study of evidentiality, especially in English and Chinese discourses.Under the framework of Hu's classification mode of evidentiality, the author selects 24 pieces of news reports from CCTV-13 and 24 pieces of news reports from VOA.The whole thesis focuses on the frequencies of different evidentials, the distribution patterns of evidentials and the result. In this paper, the author will analyze the collected corpus based on qualitative and quantitative research methods to find out the similarities and differences of evidentials in Chinese and English journalistic texts.First, evidentials are used in Chinese and English journalistic texts, but they are different in the distribution of the six types of evidentials. The hearsay evidentials account for a major percentage among all types of evidentials. It shows the objectivity and credibility of journalistic texts. Then induction evidentials and expectation evidentials are also frequently used whereas other types of evidentials are not frequency used.Second, induction evidentials in Chinese journalistic texts account for a higher percentage than induction evidentials in English journalistic texts, but account for a lower percentage in expectation evidentials. The data shows that Chinese reporters prefer to summarize the knowledge of natural and social phenomenon by sense evaluation while the English reporters prefer to get the objective facts and expresstheir ideas directly.Third,in different topics of news reports, the evidential differ in its distribution patterns as well as its frequency. In terms of hearsay evidential, induction evidentials and expectation evidentials,on reporting Malaysia Airlines Incident the total percentage of these three evidential is 95.46% in CCTV-13 news reports and 89.84%in VOA news reports. On reporting Nepal Earthquake, the total percentage of these three evidential is 96.97% in CCTV-13 news reports and 91.23% in VOA news reports. On reporting EXPO Milano 2015,the total percentage of these three evidential is 89.48% in CCTV-13 news reports and 94.29% in VOA news reports. The data shows that hearsay evidentials, induction evidentials and expectation evidentials are frequently used. And belief evidentials, deduction evidentials and reliability evidentials are used at a low percentage and different in distribution patterns.
