On Translating Tourist Texts—A Case Study Of Pingtan

The study of translating Pingtan Tourist Texts is theoretically based on the Functional Equivalence Theory of Eugene Nida. Data for analyzing the tourist texts of Pingtan was collected through field surveys and interviews, aiming at working out the existing problems in the current translation of Pingtan tourist texts. After the research, we've found some flaws in the translation, such as the fundamental mistake caused by the lack of rich grasp of English grammar or the misspelling of the words while translating. Some of the wordings are not quite appropriate either, which may cause ambiguity. Meanwhile, some translators should translate the tourist texts with the ignorance of the local cultural features. Some imperfections in Pingtan tourist management are also found in the research. Luckily, there're still some solutions to those problems. First, those texts full of Pingtan local features shall be translated with the method of transformation, paraphrasing or the transliteration in accordance with the pronunciation of Pingtan local dialect. It will create a certain feeling of freshness and a sense of humor, thus boosting the publicity of Pingtan tourism. Second, while translating scenic spots, translators shall give priority to the analysis of the shape or the connotations of them. After the analysis, it'll be easier for them to search for the most matching words to attract more foreign visitors. Third, we shall offer regular trainings of English translation with relevant incentives or punishments to the translators. Finally, certain exercises in multiple dimensions shall be provided for them to improve the quality of their target tourist texts. Moreover, this thesis aims to benefit the construction of Pingtan International Traveling Island and provide a precious reference for the tourist translation in Pingtan Tourism Sectors.
