An Analysis On The Design Features Of Macrostructure Of The Grand Contemporary Chinese-French Dictionary

Published in December 2014, the Grand Contemporary Chinese-French Dictionary (hereinafter referred to as the GCCFD) is the largest Chinese-French dictionary ever compiled by Chinese scholars. This paper aims at investigating the design features of the macrostructure of the GCCFD and making a preliminary judgment about whether the GCCFD has realized the detailed designs for the requirements of domestic orientation and foreign orientation listed in New Conception of A Contemporary Chinese-French Dictionary (Huang Jianhua & Zhang Yihua,1999) in terms of its macrostructure, based on the comparative study with the Contemporary Chinese Dictionary (6th edition) (hereinafter referred to as the CCD6).After reviewing the diachronic researches on the macrostructure of bilingual dictionaries, this thesis chooses two aspects of macrostructure-the selection and construction of lemmas as the focus of the study and summarizes the detailed designs for the domestic orientation and foreign orientation of the GCCFD. Then, it investigates the design features of the GCCFD in terms of the selection of lemmas from the following five dimensions:the number of lemmas; the selection of single-character entries; the selection of multi-character entries; the selection of new words; and the selection of terminologies. Moreover, as for the construction of lemmas, it introduces the structure of lemmas and manifests the detailed construction principles of lemmas.Based on the exhaustive data collection of all the single-character entries, multi-character entries and their labeling in the GCCFD as well as the CCD6, this thesis adopts a comparative study with the CCD6 by a comprehensive approach including document study, quantitative study and contrastive study. The main conclusions are summarized as follows:Firstly, according to the exhaustive data analysis, the GCCFD is a large-scale language dictionary which lays its main emphasis on language while giving moderate consideration to encyclopedia as well, especially science and technology; Secondly, the GCCFD strives to keep pace with the times and reflect the latest change of contemporary Chinese in terms of the selection of new words and terminologies; Thirdly, based on the contrastive study with the CCD6 in the selection of single-character entries and multi-character entries as well as the construction principles, the GCCFD has realized almost all the designs for the detailed requirements of domestic orientation and foreign orientation in terms of its macrostructure.
