Functional Discourse Analysis(FDA)is a linguistic approach to discourse. From social-semiotic perspective, discourse is viewed as a kind of social system and understood in its relationship to social structure. In college English teaching,a good textbook of College English is not only the carrier of language corpora, but also a mediator between moral education and English learning.Through using FDA to explore the 'moral elements'in College English textbooks, the research could possibly provide some considerations on the potential function of moral education for the future edition of College English textbooks and EFL instructors, helping students to form correct world views and life values.Based on the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics,FDA views discourse as an actual instance of language use, aiming to observe, describe, interpret, analyze and evaluate discourse to reveal discursive strategies of discourse, whose ultimate goal is to evaluate discourse in context.Selecting 16 major texts from Integrated Course I-II of New College English(second edition),this program makes best use of systemic functional grammar approach, including Halliday's concepts on text and the context of situation and culture for FDA,to reveal the discursive strategies of discourses,so as to provide some suggestions for Moral Education in EFL teaching.Firstly, the dissertation introduces the research background, object of the research, aims and significance of the research, and the organization of the dissertation. And then, the dissertation presents some previous studies on functional discourse analysis and some previous works related with TESL and moral education, which justifies that functional discourse analysis is widely applied in English teaching and learning, but rarely in exploring moral education in English textbooks. Therefore, based on the theoretical framework and research methodology of systemic functional grammar(Meta-functions,Context of Situation,Register,Context of Culture, and Genre),"Six Steps for Discourse Analysis" and the "Bottom-up" sequence of discourse analysis, the program specifically describes and analyzes various discursive strategies in the selected major texts of Integrated Course ?-? from three perspectives:lexical choices, grammatical structures and text types with textual structure, making an explanation and evaluation of 16 selected major texts of Integrated Course ?-? in accordance with the context of situation and context of culture. And finally some "moral educational elements" are summarized from the selected texts of Integrated Course ?-?,as well as some constructive suggestions are presented for moral education in EFL teaching. All in all, this study is of profound theoretical and practical significance. The research makes best use of the systemic functional linguistics in an attempt to build a framework to carry on the functional discourse analysis on the major texts selected from EFL College English textbooks, aiming to state the importance and provide some suggestions for moral education in EFL teaching.
