Many scholars have emphasized that intangibility and changeability are the radical characters of intangible cultural heritage,so as to show difference from tangible cultural heritage.I believe that locality is an essential character, for it reflects the origin, connotation and value of intangible cultural heritage. So I try to interpret locality by means of some relating theories from Cultural Anthropology and Cultural Geography, with Culture area as a key concept. This paper emphatically discuss the generation and contents of locality, and define it as an concrete and quantized concept, instead of an obscure and descriptive one.The correlation between intangible cultural heritage and its natural and human environment is accordingly emphasized.Based on these, locality can provide theoretical support for the exhibiting of intangible cultural heritage, and show the importance of museums faced with modernization and globalization.Locality can be used as a theoretical tool for the general study, the selecting and organizing of contents, the form design of exhibitions.Besides,it contributes to illustrating the characters of local culture, and showing the value of cultural heritage. It also contributes to solving problems such as where to exhibit or how to judge the attribution of intangible cultural heritage.
