Zhejiang is a province with diverse old bridges,in which the folding bridge and the covered timber arch bridge are the most distinctive ones.Although they are different in materials, one is stone and the other is wood, their shapes are apparently similar. Also, they have lots of similarities in the arch structure. Therefore, this paper attempts to explore the relationship between the folding bridge and the covered timber arch bridge.Firstly, this paper summarizes the existing number, spatial distribution, the structure and other basic information about the folding bridge and the covered timber arch bridge. After that, the evolution of these two bridges and other issues were discussed, which lay the foundation for later analysis.Secondly, through the comparative analysis of the folding bridge and the covered timber arch bridge,we can find that there are many coexist areas, especially the six districts(counties)around the Xianxialing of Wuyi Mountains. In the specific construction, compared to the folding bridge, the covered timber arch bridge are more complex and diverse in the system of bridge pier and deck, but there are many similarities in the bridge arch system between them, including the usage of the components and the choice of the technique. Finally,on the basis of comprehensive analysis, this paper argues that the construction technology of the covered timber arch bridge has a strong influence on the folding bridge. Moreover, from the bridge across system, the folding bridge and the covered timber arch bridge belong to the same system. The former is stone folding bridge, the latter is wooden folding bridge, which together form the transitional bridge between the beam bridge and the arch bridge.
